Byron P. Steele HS attains Purple Star Campus Designation
Byron P. Steele High School has been granted with the Purple Star Campus Designation, a special honor designed to recognize Texas school district and open-enrollment charter school campuses that show their support and commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-connected students and their families.
The announcement was sent to Steele High School on November 23rd, three weeks after the campuses were notified of the award, including Samuel Clemens High School. Steele HS now becomes the second SCUC ISD campus to attain the distinction during the 2020-2021 school year and one of only 107 campuses statewide.
“Knight Nation is a special place because of the amazing military connection and the diversity that the military families bring to our school,” said Jana Cervantes, Byron P. Steele High School principal.
Cervantes had special praise for three members of the Steele HS family who make military-connected students feel at home: Lt. Col. Ronnie Williamson (Ret.), who serves as the Military Student Transition Consultant for Steele and Dobie Junior High School; Heather Toye, English teacher, and Rubina Sanchez, lead counselor for Steele HS.
“Ronnie Williamson and Rubina Sanchez work hard to ensure military students are a part of Knight Nation,” Cervantes said. “Mrs. Toye helps get them involved in our school and community.”
Award-winning campuses must demonstrate through their TEA applications that they meet the criteria established:
1 – Designation of a campus-based military liaison.
2 – Creation and maintenance of an easily accessible web page that includes information for military-connected students and their families.
3 – A campus transition program
4 – Offered at least one of the following initiatives:
- A resolution showing support for military-connected students and families;
- Participation in Month of the Military Child or Military Family Month; or
- Partnership with a school liaison officer to encourage and provide opportunities for active duty military members.
The Purple Star Designation is a special honor created by the 86th Texas Legislature through Senate Bill 1557 in 2019.
