A native of College Station, Texas, Matt Boening holds a bachelor of music education degree from Texas Tech University, where he studied trombone with Don Lucas. While studying at Texas Tech, Mr. Boening co- founded the Texas Tech Trombone Quartet, winning second place in the inagural International Trombone Association Quartet Competition as well as being invited to perofrm at the Eastern Trombone Workshop sponsered by the “Pershing’s Own” Army Band. Mr. Boening was also a finalist in the 2000 Tilden Prize international soloist competition sponsored by the National Arts Club of New York and chaired by Joseph Alessi. Immediately following his graduation from Texas Tech, Mr. Boening (and his new bride, Natalie) moved to London to complete a Master of Music in Trombone Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating with distinction. While at the RAM, Mr. Boening studied with Denis Wick, James Watson, Dudley Bright, Ian Bousfield, and James Maynard. As a trombonist, Mr. Boening held the Second Trombone chair with the Allen Symphony for nine seasons, and has performed with Richard Gianguilio, Lutz Kohler, Sir Charles Mackerras, James Newton Howard, Sir Colin Davis, James Watson, Christian Lindberg, Doc Severinsen, Joanna MacGregor, & Sir Elton John.
Mr. Boening began his career as a band director in 2004 at Allen High School. After nine years in Allen, he accepted the head band director position at Smithson Valley High School and just completed seven fantastic years with the wonderful students of the Ranger Band. Mr. Boening is now very proud to be the newest member of the Mighty Buffalo Band, having accepted the position of Director of Bands at Samuel Clemens High School.
Superceding his role at Smithson Valley HS, Mr. Boening is the proud husband of Natalie Boening, a band director at River City Believer’s Academy in Selma, and father to Alison, Jacob and Emily. He enjoys spending time at home with his beautiful family every chance he gets!
