ATTENDANCE
Corbett Junior High official attendance is taken each morning at 9:35 am for all students. Please make every effort to have students present at this time. Student attendance is taken every period 10 minutes after the class start time. If a student misses more than 10 minutes of class time, they are considered absent from that class.
STUDENT ABSENCE POLICIES
Parents are required to send written documentation concerning the student's absence on the day the student returns to school. Such documentation should include date(s) of absence(s), reason for absence, student's first and last name, student's ID number, parent/guardian signature, and telephone number to call in case of questions. This should be brought to the attendance office within three (3) school days of the absence. A note signed by the student, even with the parent’s permission, will not be accepted. Telephone calls are not accepted as notice of an absence. An email or written note is required. Parent and doctor notes may be emailed to: corbettattendance@scuc.txed.net.
REASON FOR ABSENCE
Absences for Extracurricular and Other Activities: school districts shall not schedule nor permit students to participate in any school related or sanctioned activities on or off campus that would require, permit, or allow students to be absent from class in any one course per semester such that it would cause them to be unable to meet the 90% attendance requirement for award of credit. Telephone calls are not accepted as notice of an absence. An email or written note is required.
EXCUSED ABSENCES
Absences are excused only to the extent that make-up work will be allowed through arrangements with the teachers. It is the student’s and parent’s responsibility to contact the teacher for missed assignments at the earliest possible date. Students will be allowed ONE DAY FOR EACH DAY OF ABSENCE to make up schoolwork missed. Students shall receive a zero for any assignment or test not made up within the allotted time.
The District accepts the following as extenuating circumstances for granting credit for a class:
1. An excused absence based on personal illness
2. Illness or death in the family
3. Documented health-care appointments, dental appointments, and therapy appointments
4. Activities related to obtaining United States citizenship
5. Religious holy days
6. Required court appearances
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
When a student is absent from school, with or without the knowledge and documentation of his/her parents for any reason other than those listed above, it is an unexcused absence. In these cases, the school administration will determine if the student is allowed to make up any schoolwork missed. The following is a list of things that would be considered unexcused in the case of a tardy or absence. This list is not exhaustive.
1. Trips with parents
2. Baby-sitting
3. Car trouble
4. Missed bus
5. Over-sleeping

Ascender
Parents, please check your Ascender account when you get an attendance alert. Under the attendance tab, it will show what teacher counted your student absent and what period. You will need to email that teacher directly and ask the teacher to research the absence in question, and if in error, the teacher will need to send the attendance clerk a change form to correct the absence or tardy. The attendance clerk cannot change attendance without a form from the teacher. Once the form has been submitted, please allow up to 3 days for it to be updated in the system. You can check by looking under the Attendance tab in Ascender again to see if it was updated. If you have any questions, please call 210-619-4156.
Truancy
A student is allowed 9 absences per semester, 18 per school year, in order to meet the Compulsory Attendance Law's 10% rule. Absences over these amounts may result in loss of credit and/or grade retention.
1. First warning letter is sent out at 3 or more unexcused days or parts of days.
2. Second warning letter sent out at 6 to 8 unexcused days or parts of days.
3. Credit status letter sent out at 8 to 10 excused/unexcused absences.
4. Refer to Court letter sent out at 10 or more unexcused days.
