    `                                               Mrs. Degollado's 2nd Grade Information




    Home Folder-(sent home daily) It contains graded papers and other informative papers. An Assignment Sheet will give you information and Homework for the week. Please sign it daily.  On the back, there is a Responsibility Sheet.


    Reading Program-Our reading program is Fountas & Pinnell. It consists of Book Clubs (guided reading), shared reading and independent reading, Reading and Writing go hand-in-hand.  TEKS are: Context Clues, Cause and Effect, Reading a variety of Genres, Making Predictions, Making Inferences, Compare & Contrast, Summarization are just a few we will focus on this year in Fiction and Nonfiction reading. Reading Responses be utilized throughout each week.through writing and using graphic organizeers.  Your child will receive a numerical grade for Reading.

             ****Orange Folder-Reading Log (read and sign daily and return on Fridays) A book and choice board will be sent home to be completed by Friday.


    Language Arts Program-The three areas of Language Arts are:  Spelling, Phonics, Grammar, and Writing. Grammar and Writing are 50% of your child's grade, the other 50% will be Spelling/Phonics(Word Work).                                                                                     ****Word Work Notebook-will have our phonetic rule for the week/biweekly. Mondays and Thursdays that notebook will go home but needs to be returned each day so we are able to work in it at school.


    Math Program-Math in our class will incorporate the use of various programs. As a grade level, we stick to the Pacing Calendars. I do incorporate Math Groups twice a week to differentiate for my kiddos' needs. All will help your child be successful in Second Grade TEKS.  Math Homework will be sent home during the week (Mondays) to help reinforce skills worked on. Please help your child correct their mistakes on the homework, if needed. 


    Science and Social Studies-We follow a district-wide timeline that contain all the TEKS objectives. Numerical grades are given in both of these subjects. Participation is very important in the  many activities of learning in both subjects.  In Science, we will utilize Science Notebooks to keep all of our learning organized. Our district uses Studies Weekly for our social studies units.

    Report Cards and Progress Reports-Each student will receive a report card for each 9 weeks. Progress reports will be given to all students after every 3rd, 6th, and 9 weeks.  Our report cards and progress reports are computer generated s they were in previous years. Your child will be receiving numerical grades in the following:  Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.


    Volunteering-I strongly encourage parent participation in my room. I want you to be involved in your child’s learning. A district policy requires that all parent volunteers who work with the students need to get a background check done. If you have not filled one out, let me know and I will send one home with your child. Please return it to me asap. I use volunteers in many different ways and would love for you to be able to come in.  I am really in need of a Copy Mom and some Book Club Moms /Math Group Moms. Thank you for volunteering to help in our room.


    Closing-I am looking forward to working with your child, as well as with you. It has been said, "It takes a village to raise a child."? Well, our school, teachers, staff, you, as parents, and I make up that "village".  Us working together as a team can only ensure your child's success in 2nd Grade.
