• The House on Mango Street Project

    English 1 2019-2020

Sandra Cisneros tell her readers that she decided to write her novel, The House on Mango Street, because, “you will always be my Mango Street. You can’t erase what you know. You can’t forget who you are.” The purpose of this project is to create your own book which will help you remember what you know, as well as, show others who you are.

You will receive this letter at the beginning of The House on Mango Street project and again at the end closer to when your project is due. We will be working on this in class on Fridays throughout the semester. However, if you are absent on a Friday or a day we do work for the project, you will have to catch up on your own time. You are welcome to come in to tutoring or during your lunch to catch up with my assistance.

You will be introduced to the book and the author on week 1. For the following weeks, we will read a chapter every Friday, cover a literary term, and write our own chapter. During the last 3-4 weeks, we will complete our book. This includes creating an original cover/title page, dedication, and table of contents to go with the literary terms page and 8 chapters you have already written.

Your final project is due by the beginning of class Friday, December 13, 2019 and must include:

    1. An Original Cover (5 points)
    2. Dedication (5 points)
    3. Table of Contents (5 points)
    4. Literary Terms (5 points)
    5. 8 Chapters (10 points each)

          Total Points Possible: 100 points

This project will count as a test grade. Your best work needs to be presented if you want a good grade. The projects will be graded over the Christmas break, as it will take me some time to get through 180 books (one per student for 6 classes). Therefore, the grades will be entered when we come back in January. It will be your first test grade of the 3rd nine weeks.

This project should be enjoyable. Do your best and always ask for help if you need it!

    Sincerely,

    Ms. Brotherman
