School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)

  • School Health Advisory Council

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group, appointed by the SCUCISD Board of Trustees, which provides guidance, recommendations, and support in the eight components of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Coordinated School Health Model.

The SHAC is composed of a group of individuals from different segments of the community.  By law, a majority of the members must be persons who are parents of the students enrolled in the district and who are not employed by the district.  The SCUCISD SHAC is made up of parents, community members, and school staff working together to improve the health of all students and families through coordinated school health programs.

Evidence shows a positive correlation between utilizing one or more Coordinated School Health components and learning outcomes.  Many school districts report their efforts with coordinating health initiatives have resulted in improved attendance, lower rates of teenage pregnancy, increased participation in physical fitness activities, less smoking among students and staff, and a greater interest in healthier lifestyles.

    Vision

Our vision is for the students of Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD to reach their full academic, health, and personal potential.

    Mission

Our mission is to promote wellness based school policies and practices that will improve and maintain healthy lifestyles of our students, staff, and community.  Our partnership with parents, staff and community members will help the district ensure that local community values and health issues are reflected in the District's health education instruction.

    Goals

    1. To help ensure the success of programs designed to prevent obesity, cardiovascular disease, and Type II diabetes in the district's student and employee population.
    2. To provide recommendations to the Board of Trustees about areas of coordinated school health that could be altered to improve the health of SCUCISD students and staff.
    3. To support and promote the eight components of coordinated school health.
    4. To increase parent involvement in SHAC.
