• What is Balanced Literacy?

    Balanced Literacy is centered on the idea that First Graders need to engage in a variety of reading and writing activities. In our class we do shared, guided, interactive, and independent reading and writing.  In Mrs. Leach's class balanced literacy consists of The Daily 5, The Literacy Cafe, Guided Reading, Writing, Read Alouds, and Word Study.

    The Daily 5 is an awesome way to organize literacy instruction. The Daily Five is a structure that will help students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working with peers that will lead to a lifetime of independent literacy.

     ** COACHING or TIME - When your child gets stuck on a word, ask them if they would like coaching or time. If they say Coaching, I have attached a link that will have all the different strategies to use to help your child. If you were like me growing up, we only used "sounding out," it is not that way anymore. I hope this list helps you become familiar with the different types of strategies we are using. The link can be found at the bottom of this page.

    THE DAILY 5:

    Read to Self

    • Students read "good fit" books from their book boxes 
    • Think of a "good fit" book like must choose shoes based on the purpose, interest, and size.
    • How do I choose a "good fit" book? 
    • I PICK Good Fit Books
      • choose a book
      • Purpose-Why do I want to read it?
      • Interest-Does it interest me?
      • Comprehend-Am I understanding what I am reading?
      • Know-Do I know most of the words?

    Read to Someone

    • Students read with a partner to practice fluency.
    • They must sit EEKK (elbow to elbow and knee to knee)
    • Students can read the same book and choral read
    • Students can read different books and check eachother for understanding

    Listen to Reading

    • Students have the opportunity to listen to books on tape or cd with a small group

    Work with Words

    • Students participate in a variety of word study activities
    • They may sort words, play games, or use magnetic letters to build words

    Work on Writing

    • Students engage in writing activities

    During the reading, students work independently on their chosen activities and the teacher meets with reading groups for guided reading. Guided reading provides a conference time in which the teacher can emphasize reading strategies, sight words, concepts of print, and reading comprehension. The reading groups are fluid and change with individual students strengths and needs.

     Reading is Thinking!

    The primary goal of reading instruction in our classroom is to develop active, engaged readers.  Our comprehension instruction will focus on getting readers to think when they read, to develop an awareness of their thinking, and to use strategies that help them comprehend.


    Determine Important Ideas
    • Good readers determine essential ideas and important information
    • Encourage readers to locate the central ideas in a text

    Make Connections

    • Good readers bring their prior knowledge and experiences to reading
    • Encourage readers to make connections between the text and their life, other texts, and the world
